Stories of the Mountains of Magoebaskloof and Tzaneen

3 Nights / 4 Days package

Departures on Thursdays or Saturdays

Experience the stories of the beautiful forests and mountains of Magoebaskloof and Tzaneen with this scenic 3-night/4-day package. The package includes meals, walks, and magical places, as well as story-telling around the camp fire. The package starts and ends in Polokwane.

Day 1: Polokwane to Magoebaskloof

Depart Polokwane International Airport and drive through the centre of Polokwane for a whirlwind tour of the city en route to Magoebaskloof. You will hear stories of the Polokwane Nature Reserve – as well as the Peter Mokaba stadium, before taking the road to the mountains. We arrive in Haenertsburg and stop for lunch at the delightful Minki’s Coffee Shop in the village. After lunch we take a walk along the Louis Changuion trail to hear the story of the unique afro-montane grasslands that surround the village of Haenertsburg. The trail offers spectacular views across the mountains. Your guide will point out some of the landmarks, including the Iron Crown (tallest mountain in Limpopo) and the Ebenezer Dam. Following our visit to the village, we travel back along the R71 towards our accommodation for the next two nights – Kurisa Moya Nature Lodge.

Kurisa Moya is a Nature Lodge, but in reality it it is so much more. It is a place to unwind, a place where you can journey back into a magical time where candles and fireplaces replace electricity and birdsong the ring of a cell phone, where forests take the place of highways and footpaths the corridors of the office bringing you closer to nature and life.

We stay in the old farmhouse. Over dinner, we will hear some of the stories of the mountains of Magoebaskloof.

Day 2: Forest walks, picnics and sunsets

Enjoy a hearty breakfast at the farmhouse before joining our guides David and Paul for a walk through the forests. They will point out trees (the oldest known cabbage tree lives in the Kurisa Moya forests!), birds, butterflies and other interesting things, but don’t forget to just soak up the peace that can be found here!

Our walk takes us into the Kudu’s River valley where we could see giraffe, impala or kudu among the acacia trees, and enjoy the sweeping views. We visit nearby Graceland Eco Retreat where we have a picnic lunch before returning for a leisurely afternoon at the farmhouse.

Late afternoon, we participate in a 4x4 excursion that takes us to the best spot at Kurisa Moya for enjoying the sunset with snacks and drinks.

Dinner is again accompanied by story-telling as we learn more about the birds of the area.

Day 3: Magoebaskloof Canopy Tour, Zwakala Brewery and the Commonwealth Forest

Enjoy a leisurely breakfast at Kurisa Moya before heading out to experience a Canopy Tour in the Great Letaba valley with Magoebaskloof Adventures.  There are 13 platforms that allow for a journey through beautiful ecology and geology in one of the most spectacular waterfall gorges in South Africa. We end the tour with a light lunch.

From Magoebaskloof Adventures we travel to the recently opened Zwakala brewery to tour the brewery and taste some of the beer on offer. After our tasting we travel down the scenic Magoebaskloof towards Tzaneen Country Lodge – passing the Commonwealth forest and Tzaneen Dam en route.

Tzaneen Country Lodge provides our accommodation for the night. Dinner is served while we hear more stories about the importance of nature at Tzaneen Country Lodge.

Day 4: Tzaneen Country Lodge and Georges Valley

We have a relaxed breakfast at Tzaneen Country Lodge.

There is an opportunity for an early morning nature walk around the hotel where wildlife and birdlife is somewhat different than in the forests of Magoebaskloof. Guests also have an opportunity to make use of the services of the Earth Spa before checking out.

Our route back to Polokwane takes us via Georges Valley – an alternative route to the Magoebaskloof road. Along the way we visit the Ebenezer Dam and stop at the John Buchan memorial. We stop for a quick bite in Haenertsburg (own account) before heading back to the Polokwane International Airport.
