Excursions for Kids (and Adults!)

Early morning Bird Ringing

Duration: 7 hours

Departure location: Tzaneen

Forest birding is not easy, as one has to know bird calls in order to identify them. We sometimes cheat, and catch them so that our clients can see the birds up close! Qualified bird ringers (with affiliation to SAFRING) set up mist nets early morning. If any birds caught, a ring is put on its leg, it is weighed and measured and then released. Like with any wildlife activity, success is not guaranteed, but sometimes special and unusual birds – like the green twinspot! – can find themselves caught in the mist nets. Locations vary, and sometimes we can even set up nets at accommodation establishments in their gardens.

You will be collected from your hotel or guest house in Tzaneen early morning and taken to the ringing location. Coffee and muffins with fruit will be served for breakfast and the ringers will be on hand to provide information about the process and any birds that are caught. Even if no birds are caught, it is an enjoyable morning spent in nature with knowledgeable birders. The action usually wraps up around 12pm. This activity is suited to children from aged 6 and up.

Forest Treasure Hunt

Upon conclusion of our treasure hunt, we head to Haenertsburg village for lunch at one of the restaurants (own account) before returning to Tzaneen.
